This is perhaps one of the more relevant games we have discussed in games and culture, and I finally got a chance to play it in its original form last evening. Missile Command was made in the heart of the Cold War, when the threat of nuclear attack was an imminent and very real threat. Playing this game with the joystick instead of the keyboard made the whole experience. While it is a simple game, it is surprisingly challenging and entertaining. Again, being able to play it on an original TV really made the experience.
For some reason, instead of having an academic feel towards Missile Command, I thought it was adorable. The simple graphics and such made it seem very cute to me. I know that’s weird and I’m still struggling to understand why given the fact that it may or may not be an allegory towards the Cold War. I do understand the significance behind the attack/defend style of the game and it was very challenging and engaging as well even though it was really simple. I’m still trying to decode my initial thought though.
