The Fairchild Video Entertainment System was the first video game console to feature a microprocessor, interchangeable game cartridges, and detachachable controllers.
This system was great fun, and the controllers were (while unfamiliar in their orientation and shape) comparatively easy to use. The large joystick encouraged a variation of white-knuckled investment in the controller and its movements, particularly in Dodge’ It. The length of the cord felt unnecessary, as I found myself leaning forward and almost on top of the console itself.
